Summer of 2021 is shaping up to be one for the books. While catching up with old friends on Zoom calls had its own unique warmth last summer, you can bet it isn’t on everyone’s 2021 Bucket List. This summer will be unlike any other… as it should be. So, while you’re out and about this season, let’s ensure that you have some fool-proof ways to keep your summer skincare routine at its best.
Don’t Stop Moisturizing
With the humidity that exists in Nashville, it’s natural to want to forgo your moisturizer step. But don’t be fooled: more sweating, pool chlorine, and heat from the sun release quite a bit of moisture from your skin. Here’s the trick… use your moisturizer at night. If it still continues to feel too heavy, switch to a light-weight serum with added celery leaf juice or hyaluronic acid.
Invest In Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a powerhouse to help improve damage from sun-soaked skin. It’s such an important ingredient if you’re looking for brighter, glowier, and smoother skin. Due to Vitamin C being photosensitive to the skin (that is, when exposed to UV light, Vitamin C can cause irritation), I recommend only using your Vitamin C at night and washing your face clean the next morning. If you do use your Vitamin C in the morning, make sure to use SPF to avoid any reactions. And for those that are pregnant and/or nursing, Vitamin C is an exceptional alternative to retinol.
Smart Protection
Yes, sunscreen is important. But what’s even more important? Consistency. If I sneak sunscreen protection into another product in my daily routine, consistent use gets much easier. My makeup setting powder has SPF 30, and my morning serum has natural sun protection from plant botanicals like red raspberry seed and plum seed oil. Be sure to protect your eyes and lips too. Sunglasses do wonders and always keep an SPF lip balm in your purse.
Drink Your Antioxidants
I start my day with some antioxidant protection before my morning walk around the neighborhood. The GoopGlow Morning Skin Superpowder does the trick with a healthy dose of skin-supporting ingredients: Vitamins C and E, grape-seed proanthocyanidins, and CoQ10. These antioxidants help reduce the free-radical effects of the sun, pollution, and stress. It tastes good too–a bit like a grown-up version of Tang.
Post-Holiday Pick-Me-Up
Vacation is meant to be just that, a Vacation. Don’t fret about keeping up with your skincare routine. I give you permission to take a break (with the exception of SPF, of course). So don’t pack the retinol or the crazy peel treatment. Save those for post-holiday recovery. Ease back into everyday life by booking a spa day when you get back. Your sun-soaked skin will thank you too.
